Yahoo! Picks Cannes Ad Contest Winners

NEW YORK Yahoo! unveiled the winners from its challenge to agency creatives to produce user-crafted ads touting environmental sustainability.

The winners were Kristen Cahill, a freelance art director in New York; Diego Duprat, a freelance copywriter and filmmaker in Barcelona, Spain; and Pranav Haihar Sharma, a creative director from Indore, India.

Both Cahill and Sharma created animated spots. Cahill’s “One Sunny Day” shows a polar bear adrift on a shrinking block of ice to dramatize the consequences of climate change. Sharma’s “You vs. Him” animation shows a video game of a stick figure battling to plant more trees than another stick figure can cut down. Duprat’s “Recycle. For Life” uses video to promote recycling by showing the different hereditary characteristics “recycled” in a baby.

The three each receive a trip to the International Advertising Festival held in Cannes, France, from June 17-23. At Cannes, the winners will receive a Yahoo! Big Idea chair, have their commercials screened in the Palais des Festivals and be entered in the 2008 festival.

In all, the contest attracted 135 submissions from nine countries. Yahoo! intended the challenge to acquaint agency staffers with the ins and outs of
consumer-created advertising.

A panel of prominent agency creatives selected the three winners from a group of 10 finalists chosen through votes on the Big Shot Web site. The finalists included submissions from The Martin Agency, Lowe and TBWA.

The winners and finalists can be seen on the Big Shot in Cannes Web site.
