Got more files on your desk and more hours on your time card? So does most of the workforce. Sixty percent of the 837 managers and 351 nonmanagers recently surveyed by RainmakerThinking in New Haven, Conn., say they are working longer and harder than one year ago. Workers are taking up the slack as companies trim payroll, says Carolyn Martin, RainmakerThinking dean of faculty. To avert burnout, Martin counsels devising creative ways to motivate staff. “This can be the flexibility of a few hours off, a training program or a gift certificate to a restaurant,” she says. “Customized incentive takes the pressure off.”
