Wieden Names Planning Director

Wieden + Ken nedy has hired a Londoner as planning director for its Portland, Ore., headquarters.

Errol Flanagan, 42, will lead strategy for Nike. He has worked with such clients as the BBC, Ericsson and Ford, and most recently he ran his own consultancy, Errol Flanagan Consulting in Cornwall, England. He also helped establish Duffy Design’s London office and served as director of global planning at Attik there.

As part of a four-person planning department at Wieden in Portland, Flanagan reports to chief strategy officer Chris Riley. His hire follows the departure of Russell Davies, who took the post of planning director at Wieden’s London office in May.

“We now have a small but ex tremely senior planning group,” Riley said. “We’re all over 40, we’ve been in the business for 20 years each, and we all have very different backgrounds.”

Riley cited Flanagan’s experience in design and his work as an administrator and science and music teacher at a school for the visually impaired.

Flanagan began talking with Wieden two years ago. “They have a fantastic name in creative and communications thinking,” he said. “The fact that the relationship with Nike has been going on for so long really made me think this is a good place to work.”

Riley said Flanagan’s challenge will be “understanding one of the most successful and amazing brands in the world, and figuring out how to shape its future.”
