This Week’s Must-Haves: a Remote That Looks and Acts Like a Smartphone

Ray Super Remote, $249

While our TV viewing habits have changed a lot over the past few years, one thing hasn't: the clunky remote control. Tech startup Ray Enterprises is hoping to change that with a new Super Remote that's designed to reflect how we actually watch (and access) content. The touchscreen device—which looks more like a smartphone than a standard remote—links to your TV, cable box, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox and more, allowing you to control multiple platforms without switching remotes. By pulling programming information from your cable provider, Ray allows you to search for shows, filter them by type and rate them. Ray even addresses the eternal problem of deciding what to watch by suggesting content based on your viewing habits.

Awair Smart Air Monitor, $169

There are plenty of smart environment trackers on the market, but few can actually help you fix a problem once it's been identified. The Awair indoor air monitor not only measures temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and dust particles, but it can also communicate with other connected devices like thermostats, fans and air purifiers to help improve air quality when it detects that something's amiss. For a quicker fix, the Awair app also offers suggestions for changes you can make yourself, from swapping out your cleaning products to simply opening a window.
