Weber Joins Hyundai

Car agency veteran David Weber has made the move from the passenger’s seat to the driver’s seat, having been appointed vice president of marketing at Hyundai Motor America last week.
Bates USA West in Irvine, Calif., has long handled Fountain Valley, Calif.-based Hyundai’s estimated $100 million business, with support from its New York office. While some sources have speculated that the long-awaited arrival of a new vice president of marketing could trigger agency changes, Weber said, “We have no plans whatsoever for an agency search. … Things with Bates are fine.”
Executives at Bates declined to comment.
Weber takes over the post vacated late last year by Maurice Bowen. Vice president of parts Frank Ferrera has been serving as acting vice president of marketing.
Weber was most recently with G2 Advertising, Huntington Beach, Calif., serving as senior vice president and director of account services on Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America. G2 was closed by parent company Grey Advertising, New York, after it lost the account to Deutsch, Marina del Rey, Calif.
Prior to G2, Weber served as senior vice president and group management director at Foote, Cone & Belding’s Santa Ana, Calif., office, overseeing the Mazda North American Operations account.
Hyundai’s year-to-date sales are down 12 percent through October.
Weber’s hire is the latest in a series of changes at Hyundai, including the appointment of Finbarr O’Neill as president and chief executive officer. O’Neill replaced former chief operating officer Doug Mazza, who departed last year. –with Angela Dawso
