Universal Briefs Six

NEW YORK–Six agencies have been briefed in Orlando this week by executives from Universal Studios, who are searching for a shop to handle its estimated $30-40 million theme parks business.

Jim Yeager, a client representative, identified the agencies as Deutsch in New York, The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., McKinney & Silver in Raleigh, N.C., The Richards Group in Dallas, Doner in Southfield, Mich., and davidandgoliath in Los Angeles.

The account went into review last week [Adweek, 7/23] when the client began contacting agencies and asking them to submit credentials, sources said. Three-year incumbent Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG will not defend, sources said.

The assignment includes the theme parks account in both Los Angeles and Orlando, Fla., but the latter city has additional components, including two hotels and the CityWalk entertainment district. The review comes six months after chief marketing officer Wyman Roberts joined the company from Darden Restaurants where he spearheaded marketing for Red Lobster.

Media planning and buying, handled by DDB in Los Angeles, are unaffected by the review, sources said.
