Union Bank of California Picks Campbell Mithun

Campbell Mithun’s San Diego office has been awarded Union Bank of California’s $8 million advertising account following a review, the client confirmed last week.

The San Francisco-based financial institution had worked with the former G/F/D/M in San Francisco, which closed its doors earlier this year.

The review’s other finalists were Arnold and Pickett Advertising, both in San Francisco, and Ground Zero in Marina del Rey, Calif., said Jessica Anderson, UBC svp and chief marketing officer.

“All four had really great creative, but we felt the history of Campbell Mithun in San Diego would be really helpful to us. They have a good reputation for community involvement,” Anderson said, adding that the bank has a big presence there.

Work will include strategy and creative, said Campbell Mithun managing director Gary Meads. He noted that the shop has “an opportunity to define the strength of this great brand and put forth a new and dynamic creative voice in what has become a wildly competitive category.”

Media duties remain with Round 2 Communications in Los Angeles. Historically, the bank has primarily done outdoor and radio advertising, with very little television, said Anderson.

UBC had worked with G/F/D/M and its predecessor agencies, including Zuckerman Fernandes & Partners, for about 16 years, Anderson said.

Campbell Mithun’s first ads for the bank are expected to break early next year.

UBC has 224 branches in California, six in Oregon and Washington and 15 internationally. It is a subsidiary of UnionBanCal Corp., which has assets of $36.2 billion, and is the third-largest commercial bank in California.

Campbell Mithun’s San Diego office also works with clients including Omni Hotels, WD-40, Hitachi, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and the San Diego Zoo.
