TV Theme Songs Redux

If you’re thinking songs in some recent commercials sound awfully familiar, you’re right. Mcgarrybowen rerecorded The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s famous theme song, “Love Is All Around,” for a Chase ad showing a young woman making it in a big city. Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners in Sausalito, Calif., has remade the oft-imitated Laverne & Shirley theme song, “Making Our Dreams Come True,” for a Converse spot. “It really embodied the premise of what makes a true Converse person who they are. The belief in doing things their own way [and] not following the status quo like lemmings,” says creative director John Butler. What other theme songs might make a good ad soundtrack? Cheers for Budweiser or Family Ties for Kleenex? Stay tuned.

Teen Heartthrob Turns Director

Andrew McCarthy—who stole many a teenager’s heart in films such as Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire—has signed with Creative Film Management International for commercial director representation. McCarthy, 43, agreed to sign after being approached by company president Lou Adesso’s son, Lou Adesso Jr., who is head of sales for the company. “[McCarthy] loves directing and has always wanted to do commercials. He’s intrigued by them,” the elder Adesso says. “He convinced us he could do it and wants to do it.” McCarthy has directed a short film, News for the Church, which is based on a Frank O’Connor short story about life in an Irish village. He’s done no commercials—yet. “We’re just now starting to let people out in the advertising world know that he’s available,” Adesso says.
