Traffic Increases to Online Newspapers

SAN FRANCISCO — Online news sites experienced a spike in traffic during the week ending March 31, according to a new Nielsen/NetRatings report.

The report found that more Internet surfers were logging on at work to read national, local and business news. The saw greatest rise in traffic, gaining 65 percent more traffic than the previous week and attracting 479,000 unique visitors. was in close second, soaring 59 percent over the previous week and drawing 817,000 office workers to their site. also had a significant increase, jumping 24 percent to more than 2.2 million surfers. and rose 22 and 21 percent, respectively.

Jarvis Mak, senior Internet media analyst at NetRatings, argued that “[online newspapers] ability to think more like a 24-hour news radio station and less like a once-a-day news source has delivered a growing audience.”
