Freeman was born in Huber Heights, Ohio, where he was a top high school football recruit. He went on to start as a linebacker for Ohio State, helping lead the team to four conference titles. He then briefly played in the NFL before returning to Ohio State to earn a master’s degree in sports management.

Freeman went on to become a linebacker coach at Kent State and Purdue, as well as the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati. Last year, after his first regular season as the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, Freeman made history by becoming the first assistant coach since 1996 to be promoted to head coach of Notre Dame Athletics.
