The 10 Most Watched Ads on YouTube in January

Supercell and Apple top the list, Watson visited Sesame Street, and a few Super Bowl ads got early starts

Headshot of Tim Nudd

Many of last weekend’s Super Bowl commercials are now into the tens of millions of views on YouTube. But only a few of them got significant views in January—among them, Mr. Clean and Budweiser, both of which appear below on Adweek and Google’s YouTube Ads Leaderboard for January, ranking the month’s most watched ads on the video platform.

Mr. Clean was good for No. 4 on the list, beaten by a spot for Clash Royale (made by Supercell, whose games regularly appear on this list) as well as two Apple ads. (The Mr. Clean ad was posted to YouTube on Jan. 26 and got 2.6 million views through Jan. 31, though it now has more than 13 million views. Likewise, Budweiser’s ad got 2.4 million views in January, but was posted Jan. 31—so it only had one day to chalk up results for this list. The “Born the Hard Way” spot now has more than 27 million views.)

Elsewhere on the list, Lyft makes its third appearance on the Leaderboard with a new “Undercover Lyft” video starring Odell Beckham Jr. Covergirl, Dodge and United Healthcare all make the list, as does IBM, whose integration with Sesame Street from last fall got a second wind with 1.4 million views last month.

Check out all 10 spots below.

Note: To be eligible for Adweek and Google’s YouTube Ads Leaderboard, videos must be marked as ads on YouTube (i.e., they get some paid views) but must also earn significant organic views. The algorithm factors in paid views, organic views and audience retention (how much of a video people watched). The views counts are for the month in question only, though the ads could have been uploaded in prior months.
