TBWA\C\D N.Y. Taps President

NEW YORK TBWA North America has named Corey Mitchell to lead TBWA\Chiat\Day’s office here as president.

Mitchell, whose previous title was worldwide managing director on the agency’s Mars account, becomes part of a New York management team that includes ecd Gerry Graf and Suzanne Powers, executive director of strategy and business development.

“Corey understands the fundamentals of what it takes to build a business and help create new business opportunities,” said TBWA North American president Robert LePlae, in a statement. “His ability to forge powerful relationships with network clients and partner them effectively with TBWA’s various marketing disciplines will prove instrumental as we accelerate the expansion of our media arts model.”

Mitchell, 38, becomes the first president since Brett Gosper, who led TBWA’s New York Group from September 2004 until September 2005. LePlae also has functioned as an office leader since moving from Los Angeles to New York in late 2005.

Mars is now the office’s largest client, after the loss of Sprint Nextel, for which TBWA\C\D previously created consumer-directed ads. In the first quarter, Sprint reviewed creative duties on its consumer and business-directed ads, awarding the consolidated business in March to Omnicom Group’s Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco.

Mitchell, an eight-year veteran of TBWA, will continue to oversee Mars until the agency names a successor in that role. The shop is considering an outsider for the post and could name someone within a few weeks.

Other New York clients include Absolut, Nivea, Embassy Suites and Samsonite.

In his new post, Mitchell will lead the agency and Tequila, its direct marketing and interactive arm here. Managing director Steve Wilcox continues to run Tequila New York.

In a related move, Jamie Gallo, worldwide managing director on Absolut, has assumed the additional role of managing director of New York.
