Sony, Apple Are Honored as Advertisers

NEW YORK The International Advertising Festival has named Sony PlayStation its Advertiser of the Year, and the Art Directors Club has deemed Apple and TBWA\Chiat\Day recipients of its Vision Award.

Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, will receive the IAF award, which honors Sony PlayStation advertising. A PlayStation 2 ad, “Mountain,” by TBWA in London, won the Cannes Film Grand Prix last year, and a PlayStation print ad, “Rebirth,” picked up the Grand Prix in press in 2003.

Sony was last named Advertiser of the Year in 2000, when president and chief executive Nobuyuki Idei received the award. While that honor was presented for Sony’s overall advertising, this year’s award focuses on its PlayStation work.

Separately, the ADC will honor Apple and TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif., for its Apple advertising. This is the first time the ADC has given the Vision Award to both the client and agency. Apple received the honor, then known as the Management Award, in 1988. Hewlett-Packard received last year’s Vision Award.

Apple and TBWA\C\D will be honored at the ADC annual awards gala in New York on June 2.

Sony will be honored during the Cannes Festival on June 25.
