Snap is announcing the first version of its Spectacles smart glasses to offer augmented-reality display as the technology has seen a boom in adoption amid quarantine conditions.

Only available to developers for the time being, the product is the fourth iteration of the social platform’s camera-enabled eyewear and the first capable of superimposing graphics on the wearer’s surroundings. The launch is part of a new headwear arms race among major tech players like Facebook and Apple, which are betting that AR gadgets will eventually be as transformative as the mobile phone.
