Smith Barney Picks Hill, Holliday

BOSTON Smith Barney has selected Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos to handle creative chores on its advertising account. Estimated billings are $20 million.

The competition came down to Interpublic Group’s Hill, Holliday in Boston and New York and Publicis Groupe’s Fallon in Minneapolis, sources said. Those two shops were called back to make additional presentations following the elimination of IPG’s McCann Erickson, New York, in what was believed to be the final round [Adweek Online, May 24].

Fallon handles the account of Smith Barney parent Citibank.

Fallon referred queries to client officials, who did not immediately return calls. Hill, Holliday representatives could not be reached.

The financial services firm’s account had been at Omnicom Group’s Merkley + Partners, which split with the client and did not participate, sources said.

New York-based Joanne Davis Consulting helped negotiate compensation issues, but did not guide the overall review, sources said.

The victory ends a lengthy new-business drought for Hill, Holliday, which had not added a significant client since last October, when it won the $60 million Liberty Mutual account following a review.
