CHICAGO Commercial music producer and composer Steve Shafer died Dec. 30 after a yearlong bout with liver cancer. He was 52.

Shafer, who worked in the commercial music production industry for 25 years, was probably best known for helping compose the “Be Like Mike” jingle for Gatorade. He also worked for clients such as McDonald’s, 7 Up, Miller Light, Sears, Wrigley’s and Mazda.

In 1986, Shafer founded Shafer/Antelis Music in Chicago with current Leo Burnett director of music aid Ira Antelis.
