Sachs to Drive Growth at DraftFCB

CHICAGO Interpublic Group’s DraftFCB said it has promoted Toby Sachs to chief global growth officer, overseeing new business efforts at the shop.

A 25-year industry veteran, Sachs had been a group management director at the shop, formed last year through the union of IPG’s Draft and FCB. He has recently helmed agency accounts such as Boeing, Dow and Sprint PCS.

“In filling the position, DraftFCB senior leadership wanted an individual with excellent account management skills, someone with a successful new business background, a person with international experience and the ability to work across borders and cultures,” said agency CEO Howard Draft.

Sachs takes over the position from Tony Weisman, who joined the Chicago office of Digitas at the beginning of the year. Digitas, an independent, is in the process of being acquired by Publicis Groupe.

Prior to working at Draft, Sachs spent nearly 20 years at Leo Burnett. After managing the shop’s Kellogg account in Europe, Asia and the U.S., Sachs moved to new business, where he helped the shop bring in accounts such as the U.S. Army and the United States Postal Service.

A U.K. native, Sachs became a U.S. citizen in 2002. He will report to Laurence Boschetto, president and chief operating officer of DraftFCB. He will remain based in Chicago.

DraftFCB made headlines when it won the creative portion of the $570 million Wal-Mart account in the fall, only to be stripped of the business in December and barred from participating in a controversial second review. The retail giant has never disclosed in detail why it ordered the re-pitch, nor has it explained the ouster of two top marketing executives, apparently for violating the company’s strict ethics policies.

One of those execs, Julie Roehm, has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart, claiming the company violated the terms of her employment contract. The client has denied those claims.
