Riney Chooses Luker to Lead Creative on HP

Publicis & Hal Riney has hired Steve Luker as senior vice president, creative director on the agency’s global Hewlett-Packard business PC account.
Luker has been working with the San Francisco agency on a part-time, freelance basis for months, commuting from his home in Seattle. He recently helped launch the shop’s first advertising effort for HP, a global print and interactive campaign that was tagged “Engineered on a human level” [Adweek, Feb. 15].
“Joining Publicis & Hal Riney feels like a homecoming,” said Luker, who worked with Riney president Scott Marshall when the two were at Cole & Weber in Seattle. “I’ve always kept in touch with [Scott], so coming here just felt right.”
Luker previously served as a creative director at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco.
He left the shop in early 1998 to work as a freelancer. While at Goodby, Luker worked on accounts such as Norwegian Cruise Lines, Nike and Isuzu.
As creative director on the $100 million HP business, Luker will work directly with worldwide account director Tim Maleeny and oversee a team of three other staffers.
The agency is preparing to shoot new TV spots for HP, which is the next step in the campaign, said Luker. That work will break sometime in May, he said.
Luker said the campaign has the client galvanized. “It’s early to tell … but I think it’s been a success so far,” he said.
In addition to his duties on HP, Luker will be expected to be involved on the new business front, according to agency representative Anne Saulnier.
