R/GA to Design Web Site for Memorial Competition

NEW YORK R/GA has been selected to develop a Web site for an international competition that will determine the design for the World Trade Center memorial. The memorial will honor those lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and 1993 terrorist bombing.

The New York interactive agency was tapped by LandAir Project Resources, a New York project management firm that was hired last month by the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. to manage the competition. LandAir partnered with the New York Historical Society to win the business.

The LMDC, an organization established to redevelop and revitalize Lower Manhattan following the Sept. 11 attacks, said it plans to launch the international competition this spring. LandAir and the historical society will help structure and administer the competition and ensure that every design submission will be reviewed fairly and in a standard manner. “[LandAir] will help manage the submissions in an efficient manner,” said a LMDC representative.

R/GA, subcontracted by LandAir, will be responsible for the creation, design and administration of the Web site, where interested parties can obtain more information about and submit proposals for the competition, the rep said.

The LMDC, which is expecting thousands of entries, said it hopes to choose a design for the memorial by the fall. According to information on the LMDC Web site (www.renewnyc.com), the memorial should recognize victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania and victims of the 1993 terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center; provide space for contemplation; create a unique and powerful setting; and convey historic authenticity.
