Nearing the halfway mark this year, U.S. retail and food service sales have not only recovered, but are well above their 2019 levels, according to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

As of the end of May, advance monthly retail and food service sales for the first five months of 2021 totaled an estimated $3 trillion on a seasonally adjusted basis, compared to approximately $2.5 trillion for the same period in 2019. That marks an increase of about 18.5%.
