The gap has never been wider between the fit and the unfit in this country. In earlier times, few people made a big deal of working out, but most people got some exercise as a matter of course. Now, a full-blown fitness culture exists side-by-side with an unprecedented incidence of torpor. A Gallup poll shows where the majority of adults stand (or sit, as the case may be) on this spectrum.

As you can see from the chart, a majority of Americans don’t even pretend they regularly get the sort of exercise that causes large increases in one’s breathing and/or heart rate.
