NEW YORK — Online sales for the third quarter reached $17.9 billion, up two percent from the second quarter and 35 percent versus the same time a year ago, according to the latest e-commerce report from comScore Networks.

Year-to-date sales through Sept. 30 totaled $52.5 billion, a 41 percent boost over the first nine months of 2001, and nearly equal to the $53.1 billion in spending posted in all of 2001.

The research firm’s sales figures are based on the actual buying activity of a representative cross-section of more than 1.5
