PS3 Spot Dazzles With Imagery, Edits

NEW YORK This new spot from TBWA\Chiat\Day for the lower priced PlayStation 3 (now down to $399, folks) is loud, fast and insanely graphic, which is the most immediate way to convey the addictive experience of game play.

Brilliantly edited to the metal-lish soundtrack of “Ladies and Gentlemen” by Saliva, it opens with “Ladies and gentlemen, good evening … you’ll see if seeing is believing … check to see if your ears and eyes are bleeding, if you’re still breathing.” If you are, you get the pounding visceral sense of a self-contained PS3 world with every capability you’d ever want or need, so take that, far more successful Wii and Xbox 360! The dazzling visuals start with views of the shiny, sleek black console itself, which is convex on one side with a Spider-Man-font-inspired PlayStation logo.

There’s some really cool animation to suggest that the console (like the universe?) is expanding. It grows creepy cool black tentacles, and becomes a fire-breathing monster, among other things. We get an incredible visual mashup that’s incredibly paced. It includes a big focus on the PS3’s Blu-ray movie capability, exclusive gaming content available at the PlayStation online store, as well as the Second Life-like graphics in PlayStation’s new service, called Home.

Of course, gamers will recognize bits and pieces of popular titles like Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Grand Turismo 5 Prologue.

And given the compelling nature of the spot, I give it four clanks and a beast.
