Pizza Hut Contacts Agencies

NEW YORK — Pizza Hut, which awarded BBDO its advertising account in 1987, has begun contacting agencies requesting credentials meetings, sources said. The Dallas-based client ireached out to a small group of agencies last week.

A client representative confirmed the review, characterizing the assignments up for grabs as “smaller project work.”

She added: “BBDO will still be our lead agency. We are not replacing them and all the things they do for us.” She could not immediately say why Pizza Hut was enlisting other agencies for project work instead of going with BBDO. She also declined to comment on the size and scope of the projects.

BBDO executives could not immediately be reached for comment.

Pizza Hut spent more than $100 million in media through September of this year, according to CMR. The chain is owned by Tricon Global, which also owns Taco Bell and KFC. Those accounts are handled by Foote, Cone & Belding and BBDO, respectively.

BBDO has produced commercials for Pizza Hut featuring numerous celebrities, including Spike Lee, Ivana Trump, Marie Osmond and Carmen Elektra, for its various pizza brands such as the Twisted Crust, Pan Pizza, Thin ‘N Crispy, Hand-Tossed Style, Stuffed Crust and Big New Yorker pizzas. Its corporate tagline is “The best pizzas under one roof.”
