Phelps Picks Up 3 More Clients

Shortly after picking up two accounts from the now-defunct shop G/F/D/M, The Phelps Group said last week it has added three more clients with total billings of more than $4 million.

The new accounts are Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ Western region; business-to-business work for CKE Restaurants; and the National Alarm Computer Center, said Joe Phelps, president of the 21-year-old Santa Monica, Calif., agency.

“Each one of these companies is a best-in-class client,” said Phelps. “They fit right in with the top-of-category clients we have.”

Work for Fairmont will include creative and media as well as promotions for its upscale properties in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Calif., Maui, Hawaii, and Scottsdale, Ariz. Phelps said the account had previously been par celed out to several agencies but was consolidated at Phelps after a review that included undisclosed shops. The San Francisco-based client could not be reached for comment.

For CKE, which operates the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s chains, Phelps is charged with aiding in franchisee recruitment. Work for the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based client will include print advertising, public relations and customer-relationship management, Phelps said.

That business was also won following a review, Phelps said. Men delsohn/Zien in Los Angeles handles consumer advertising for Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s. M/Z president Richard Zien said he was unaware that CKE did franchisee recruitment or was searching for an agency to handle the account. The client did not return calls for comment.

Work for the NACC, a Tyco International subsidiary that provides alarm monitoring services, will primarily be business-to-business advertising, promotions and collateral development.

NACC also considered Doner Direct in Baltimore, said a representative for the Irvine, Calif., client. There was no incumbent. “Phelps was located in California, and we were impressed with their work,” the client representative said.

The wins follow Phelps’ addition of former G/F/D/M clients Dunn-Edwards Paints and Whole Foods Markets [Adweek, April 15].

“It’s good growth,” Phelps said. “It’s a lot better than last year.”

Founded in 1981, Phelps has 60 employees and claimed 2001 billings of $50 million. Its other accounts include Countrywide, Crystal Cruises, Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems, Petco and the Tahiti Tourism Board.
