PHD Names Cooper Global CEO

NEW YORK Mike Cooper has been named worldwide CEO of Omnicom Group’s PHD, the company has confirmed. Cooper succeeds David Pattison, who resigned nearly a year ago.

Most recently, Cooper had been CEO of Omnicom Media Group Asia; before that, he led OMD’s Asia-Pacific operations.

Cooper is relocating to London to assume his new position. He will report to Daryl Simm, chief executive of Omnicom Media Group, the unit that oversees the holding company’s media agency networks OMD and PHD and associated firms.

Cooper was recruited by Omnicom in 1997 to set up OMD Asia, and he is credited with building what is now one of the larger media agency operations in the region. In 2005 he oversaw pitches that brought more than $130 million in new business to the agency in China alone, including the $50 million Johnson & Johnson account.

Cooper began his agency career in 1983 when he joined the media department of Saatchi & Saatchi in London. He then transferred to Hong Kong to become Saatchi’s media director and within nine months rose to regional media director for the Asia-Pacific region. He also established Saatchi’s office in China.

In 1990 Saatchi promoted Cooper to managing director in Hong Kong, where he ran a full-service operation with accounts including Hutchison Telecom, Toyota and British Airways.

In 1995 he joined regional satellite broadcaster CNBC, running the company’s ad sales operations in Asia before he moved to Omnicom two years later.

Pattison also ran PHD from London before leaving last year. He co-founded the shop in 1990. Omnicom acquired PHD in 1998.
