Peter McHugh Out as Steve Chavez Named Top GM Creative at Burnett

Chavez previously held posts at Doner, Saatchi

Steve Chavez, the executive creative director for Buick at Leo Burnett Detroit, is taking over as the agency’s General Motors ecd. He replaces Peter McHugh, who is leaving the agency.

McHugh, who joined Burnett in 2007, said in a statement: “The Detroit office is in exceptionally good shape now, with a number of hires from the U.S. as well as from abroad, doing surprising, award-winning work across all media. So, the timing for me to take a break and tend to some outstanding family issues couldn’t be better.”

During his tenure at Burnett, McHugh helped launch the new Chevy Cruze in Western and Central Europe and introduced the redesigned Chevy Colorado truck in Asia. He also oversaw GM U.S. vehicle launches including the Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain and Sierra Heavy Duty truck.

Before joining Burnett, McHugh was the chief creative officer and a managing partner of Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis. He also was an ecd and partner at 180, Amsterdam, where he helped win the agency’s Adidas consolidated global business in partnership with TBWA, and has held creative roles at Fallon, Minneapolis; Chiat/Day, Toronto; and Y&R, Chicago.

His successor, Chavez, has worked at Doner in Detroit on Mazda and at Saatchi & Saatchi in Los Angeles on Toyota.
