The Cola Wars are back, with Pepsi firing the first shot in an unexpected commercial remake.
A new ad from TBWA\Chiat\Day revisits a 1995 Super Bowl spot from BBDO. “Diner 2” pits a Pepsi truck driver and Pepsi Max against his Coca-Cola counterpart and Coke Zero. TBWA enlisted Joe Pytka to direct again and even cast the original spot’s Pepsi driver in the new version as the man behind the counter. But will the average consumer care or even remember the original? Someone still appreciates it, apparently, because it’s gotten more than 1 million views on YouTube.
In the earlier spot, the truck drivers sip colas and bond over the music playing in the diner, “Get Together” by the Youngbloods. The love-fest ends when the Coke driver refuses to give back the Pepsi and gets thrown out the window. The tagline reminded viewers, “Nothing else is a Pepsi.”
In the update, set to “Why Can’t We Be Friends” by War, the Pepsi driver gets the heave-ho when he uses his phone to make a video of the Coke driver enjoying the competition’s beverage. The ad ends by sending viewers to Facebook, where they can debate the merits of the zero-calorie drink and the commercial.
The remake gives the new competitive push added talk value at launch, but wouldn’t a well-done original concept have been preferable as a first hit? What’s next? Justin Bieber climbing over traffic to get his next door neighbor a Pepsi?
