NEW YORK TBWA\Chiat\Day’s latest Visa spot puts former Madonna-backing vocalist Niki Haris in the spotlight with a soulful, contemporary rendition of Petula Clark’s “Downtown.” In the Paul Hunter-directed musical, the choreographer/singer comes to the aid of a frazzled frump who loses her heel crossing the street. She shuffles her into a salon and a shop for a makeover and new duds and helps transform her into a downtown beauty. The spot features a delightful take on the classic track and even gives a playful wink and a nod to Madonna’s 1985 video for “Material Girl.”
