Panera Bread and decorated chef-activist José Andrés have joined forces to draw attention to widespread hunger, food deserts and food waste in America. A kickoff event on Monday served meals to 1,500 needy people in Washington, D.C., one of the most food-insecure regions of the country, according to the United Way. (It’s also Andrés’ adopted hometown.)
