Palisades Media Group Brings In Media Director

Veteran media executive Barbara Stein has joined fast-growing independent agency Palisades Media Group as its first executive vice president/media director.

Stein, 52, has more than two decades of experience in the Southern California market, much of it at Carat in Los Angeles and its predecessor, ICG, where she was senior vice president/director of corporate buying.

At PMG in Santa Monica, Calif., she will be reunited with several former colleagues—PMG was founded in 1996 by president Roger Schaffner and a team of fellow ICG staffers, with Miramax Films as its flagship account.

“When I came here, I saw half a dozen people I worked with in the ICG days,” Stein said. “I felt at home the minute I came in. There is a real smart, sophisticated team, and I think that electricity is going to translate to any client we can bring in here.”

While the agency continues to do a lot of work in entertainment, boasting such clients as Independent Distribution Partners, Lion’s Gate and Artisan studios, it has enjoyed considerable success building up its general business and retail portfolio in recent months.

PMG began working on the general business side with the Virgin Megastores account two years ago, but in the past 18 months has added Electronic Arts, House2 Home, Lucky Jeans, the Hollywood Bowl, the L.A. Philharmonic and other nonentertainment pieces of business.

Schaffner estimates that $70 million of the shop’s $300 million in claimed annual billings now comes from general business accounts.

“The business division has grown so fast that we need somebody to hold everything together,” Schaffner said. “Barbara’s pretty good glue.”

Stein will supervise buying for the agency’s entertainment division, its recently formed business division and its print and outdoor operations. She will team with PMG’s national broadcast buying team, which continues to report directly to Schaffner.
