Deutsch/LA faced a delicate situation when it was hired last spring to take over Old Navy’s TV image advertising. The retailer’s in-house creative department, which for seven years had developed the brand’s campy commercials, was now under orders to collaborate with Deutsch—essentially a demotion. The good news for Deutsch was that the client was well versed in the creative language; the bad news was that it was heavily invested in work that Deutsch was hired to revamp.
