Ornelas Hires Ravelo

Fills Senior Account Post With 14-Year Vet Of Mexico City’s BBDO, Ogilvy & Mather
DALLAS–Ornelas & Associates, which last month launched a hunt for an executive creative director, has filled a new senior account service position after a year-long search.
Mauro David Ravelo, a former client services director in Mexico City for both BBDO and Ogilvy & Mather, was hired as director of client services at the Dallas Latino marketing agency.
In addition to heading up account services, Ravelo will assist president Victor Ornelas in day-to-day management and new business activities. “I was wearing both hats–president and director of client services,” said Ornelas. “We were up to 40 people, and I wasn’t able to spend as much time with our clients . . . as they really needed.”
Ornelas said he began looking at candidates a year ago through a consultant before discovering Ravelo.
Ravelo, 36, has worked the past 14 years in Mexico. From 1985 to 1994, the U.S. citizen progressed from an account assistant post to eventually oversee account services at Ogilvy for clients like American Express and Grupo Iusacell, that country’s largest cellular company.
At BBDO Mexico, Ravelo oversaw $40 million in billings from clients like Frito-Lay and Pizza Hut as vice president and director of client services. Ravelo could not be reached for comment at press time.
Ornelas said Ravelo was tapped not only for his experience, but the reputation of his employers. “Ogilvy is known for its strategic thinking and brand building . . . and BBDO is really committed to the creative product. And creative is what drives this agency,” Ornelas said.
Ravelo’s creative counterpart, Tony Sandoval, will leave the agency in the next six months. Ornelas said a search similar to the wide-ranging one that netted Ravelo will be made for Sandoval’s replacement.
