NEW YORK Yahoo said its second-quarter earnings rose sharply as the Web portal benefited from strong demand for Internet brand and search advertising.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., company reported net income of $192 million, excluding $563 million generated through the sale of an investment, up 70 percent from a year earlier. Quarterly sales, excluding fees paid to Yahoo’s search distribution partners, were $875 million, a 44 percent improvement from last year’s second quarter. Yahoo’s revenues were in the middle range of its projections given last quarter.
