O’Neill Departs Euro RSCG MVBMS Partners

NEW YORK Joe O’Neill, former managing director at Euro RSCG MVBMS Partners known for creating most of the agency’s MCI/WorldCom work over the past seven years, has left the agency to partner in a new consultancy.

A representative for the agency confirmed that O’Neill resigned last week.

The consultancy, as yet unnamed, is currently based in Westchester County and will open a New York office at the end of the month, O’Neill said.

“Copywriters write great copy for other people, but lousy copy for themselves, so we’re still working on a name,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill, 56, was moved from working on WorldCom last spring to the Volvo account. The Clinton, Miss.-based long-distance carrier filed for bankruptcy last year and currently faces a flurry of securities-related investigations—the fallout from an internal audit in April 2002 that revealed accounting irregularities that forced WorldCom to restate its finances for the previous three years, to the tune of some $7.2 billion.

“When WorldCom imploded, they just stopped advertising, so I was asked to work on Volvo’s launch of the XC-90,” O’Neill said, referring to the car maker’s first SUV, which was unveiled last fall. “I had wanted to start my own business and I felt after completing work on the last Volvo campaign, that would be the right time. I didn’t want to be in the middle of another project and leave the agency in the lurch, so it was a case of now or never.”
