Olive Jar Branches out

Olive Jar Studios is taking root on the West Coast after being acquired last week by Red Sky, Los Angeles.

“We are keeping our presence in both cities,” said Matthew Charde, executive producer at Boston-based Olive Jar. “We were ready to take the next step.” Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Currently headed by Charde and Fred Macdonald, creative director/CEO, Olive Jar opened in 1984 and first made a name for itself animating clay logos used by MTV. Since then, Olive Jar has worked on commercials for the Cartoon Network. Other clients include Coca-Cola, Levi Strauss and Universal Studios.

The animation company will be “completely integrated” with Red Sky, an interactive technology provider, which also recently acquired White Noise Productions, a Los Angeles-based multimedia firm. The Olive Jar name will be discontinued.

The acquisitions marry creativity with technology, while increasing Red Sky’s presence in the Boston marketplace.

In addition to its Boston and L.A. locations, Red Sky has offices in New York and other major markets. Clients include FMC Corp., Miller Brewing Co., Paine Webber, Sony and Texaco.
