Ogilvy Lands Miller Brewing Work

Ogilvy & Mather last week was awarded a project for Miller Brewing Co.’s Western region without a review, the agency said.

The Culver City, Calif., shop will promote the May 4 boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. Work will include point-of-sale materials, posters and possibly print ads, said Miller rep Marc Spiegel. The budget was undisclosed.

“It’s a way to take advantage of a very big fight,” Spiegel said. “We have auxiliary materials to promote the fight and promote our relationship with Vargas.” (Vargas serves as a Miller spokesman for responsible drinking.) Miller will also have identification in the boxing ring.

Ogilvy in New York handles ads for Miller Light. The brewer also works with Chicago shops J. Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam, and Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore.

Ogilvy, here, also recently won BP’s Arco and am/pm accounts, following BP’s decision to consolidate the creative portion of the business with the network, whose Chi cago office handles its global account.

Rick Roth, co-president of Ogilvy, here, said the 70-person shop, which has been beset by layoffs in recent months, is committed to boosting its reputation. “[The win is] extremely important to us, and not just because of the signal it sends,” he said. “We’re taking advantage of our network and delivering our own expertise.”
