NEW YORK Advertising spending for the first half of 2008 fell 1.4 percent to $67.6 billion, compared to the same period a year ago, according to figures released by Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Ad spending by the top 10 advertisers was down almost 6 percent to $7.7 billion, versus the same period a year ago, per the Nielsen data.

By media sector, cable TV, with generally cheaper ad rates than broadcast, was a big gainer, posting an 8 percent increase over the first half of 2007.
