Studies indicate that involvement in sports can have profoundly positive effects on the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth, though concerns around ostracization may put incredible pressure on participants to remain in the closet. Unfortunately, this is seen in many pro sports rosters. While six former NFL players have come out after retiring from the game, Carl Nassib became the first openly gay active player as recently as June 21 of 2021.
