“Toshiba Contenders Emerge
LOS ANGELES-Toshiba America’s computer systems division has narrowed the list of contenders for its estimated $30 million business to nine West Coast agencies, said sources. The shops, which last week began chemistry checks with the Irvine, Calif., client, are D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and Kovel/Fuller, both Los Angeles; DGWB, Irvine; and JSM+ Communications, Santa Monica, Calif.; plus five undisclosed others, sources said. Incumbent Bozell Worldwide, Costa Mesa, Calif., was invited to pitch but declined. The client will cut to four or five finalists within the next two weeks, sources said. Toshiba executives declined comment.
“FTD, Interactive Spinoff Seek Shops
CHICAGO-FTD Corp.’s interactive spinoff,, plans to spend the “predominant portion” of the $90 million raised in an initial stock sale on advertising and is looking for an agency, the company said last week. FTD will also be hiring a new shop for what has been a $16 million account, having split from Doner in Southfield, Mich., sources said. The Downers Grove, Ill.-based floral service declined to confirm any agency changes or reviews. The client, however, said that FTD Corp. and will probably have separate agencies.
“Fallon, Wenner Media Part Ways
CHICAGO-Wenner Media, New York, has begun a search after splitting with longtime agency Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis. Officials at the company and agency said the decision was mutual and based on “creative differences.” Fallon was Wenner’s agency for 14 years, and created campaigns for its Rolling Stone, Us and Men’s Journal magazines. Fallon created Rolling Stone’s much-lauded “Perception/Reality” campaign. Wenner spent $2 million on ads for all its ventures last year, per Competitive Media Reporting. John Berg, Wenner’s group publisher, is handling the search.
“Saatchi Brands Its New Entity
NEW YORK-Saatchi & Saatchi plc last week combined Rowland Worldwide and Saatchi & Saatchi Business Communications to create Rowland Communications Worldwide here. Separately, Wilmington, Del.-based client DuPont has consolidated its pharmaceutical, nutrition and health and agricultural business at the new entity. Rowland and Saatchi previously handled DuPont on a regional basis. Billings were not disclosed, but estimated at $100 million worldwide by a source. Saatchi will retain its office in Rochester, N.Y.

NEW YORK-Deutsch’s new campaign for
Tanqueray vodka marks the end of Mr. Jenkins’ reign as brand ambassador and the demise of the shop’s five-year relationship with parent Schieffelin & Somerset, New York. Domestic duties will go to J. Walter Thompson, also in New York, which handles Tanqueray overseas. The new ads, backed by $30 million in advertising and promotions, use popular British images (a Union Jack, English bulldog, etc.) to reinforce the brand’s roots. The tagline: “London dry gin. Distinctively crisp since 1830.” Print, outdoor and radio ads broke this month.
“Bozell Buying Spree Is Not Over
NEW YORK-Following its acquisition last week of Berenter Greenhouse & Webster, New York, Bozell Worldwide is not done shopping, said Eugene Bartley, vice chairman, North American operations at Bozell. While he declined to elaborate on specific plans, Bartley said the agency is continuing to look at other categories and opportunities to make purchases. Bozell snagged Berenter because of its strong chemistry with management and the $160 million shop’s retail expertise, Bartley said.
