NBCU Ups Digital Stake

NEW YORK NBC Universal has made two significant digital distribution moves, preparing live Web coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament later this week along with a new mobile sports channel.

First, NBCSports.com will stream a live simulcast of NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Open from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 13 and 14 (this Thursday and Friday), as the network is likely looking to capture golf fans while at the office. In addition, the site will showcase a highlight show—the Lexus U.S. Open Wrapup—along with on-demand video interviews from the event, one of professional golf’s four major tournaments.

The site will also feature original editorial coverage from NBC Sports’ golf commentators as well as hole-by-hole coverage of Master’s champion Zach Johnson’s performance at the event.

Meanwhile, NBCU is also debuting a new sports-dedicated mobile channel on MobiTV, a company that delivers live TV to cell phones. Paying MobiTV subscribers can now access NBC Sports Mobile, the latest entry from the company’s Digital2Go initiative, which kicked off last March with the debut of NBC News2Go and NBC2Go (which both offer long-form NBCU network and cable content on mobile devices).

Like NBCSports.com, the new sports channel on MobiTV goes live with a heavy U.S. Open focus.

Besides providing subscribers the ability to watch live coverage of the event starting on June 14, NBC Sports will also offer the aforementioned Lexus Wrapup show and interview extras on the service.
