Nasdaq Selection Imminent; J.D. Edwards Cuts to 4

Three shops made final presentations for Nasdaq’s $30 million business last week, while J.D. Edwards selected a list of finalists to pitch its $25-30 million business later this month.

Two other clients-Starz Encore Group and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention–are expected to conclude reviews within the next four weeks.

For Nasdaq, J. Walter Thompson and Bouchez Kent + Co., both in New York, are competing against McKinney & Silver, Raleigh, N.C. Each presented creative concepts to a client panel of 23 last week. McKinney pitched first on Tuesday morning, followed by JWT that afternoon, and Bouchez Kent on Wednesday, sources said. The presentations took place at Nasdaq’s New York headquarters. A decision could come as early as today.

In choosing finalists, Nasdaq went with shops whose parent companies are listed on the Nasdaq exchange [Adweek, July 2]. The shops that were cut included the incumbent, Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmet terer/Euro RSCG. The search, which began after the arrival of marketing chief Denise Benou Stires, is being managed by New York consultancy Roth Associates.

J.D. Edwards invited four shops to pitch its business: Deutsch/LA, Marina del Rey, Calif., DWP/Bates Technology, Atlanta, Doremus, New York and San Francisco, and incumbent NeoBrands, Costa Mesa, Calif., which is teamed with Young & Rubicam, Irvine, Calif. Agency meetings are slated for Aug. 16. The four finalists were chosen from a field of eight.

Competing for CDC’s $125 million assignment targeting the youth market are Saatchi & Saatchi, New York, Campbell Mithun, Minneapolis, DDB, Seattle, and TBWA\Chiat\Day, San Francisco. That contest likely will be resolved early next month. A decision is expected sooner than that in Starz’s $40 million review, which involves at least four shops: TBWA\C\D and Publicis & Hal Riney, both in San Francisco, McCann-Erickson, New York, and B.D. Fox & Friends, Santa Monica, Calif.
