MS&L Acquires Agnew, Carter

Principals to Join Merged Hub Operation
BOSTON–The sale of Agnew, Carter, McCarthy to Manning, Selvage & Lee creates one of the largest full-service public relations shops in the region.
New York-based MS&L, which is owned by The MacManus Group, bought the 20-year-old Boston firm last week from principal owners Jack Agnew, Lew Carter and Terry McCarthy. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McCarthy retired about a year ago; both Carter, 58, and Agnew, 64, have committed to short-term employment contracts, said Carter, who will serve as managing director. Agnew will be senior counsel.
The operations of Agnew, Carter and MS&L Boston will be combined at the former’s offices at 222 Berkeley St. The new entity, called Agnew, Carter/MS&L, will have annual revenues of $6 million and a staff of 55.
While Carter admitted that age was a factor in the decision to sell, he said more important was the changing nature of the marketplace requiring firms to become more technologically proficient.
Carter also mentioned as a key factor the need for greater access to resources in markets in the U.S. and abroad. For instance, the merged entity will begin servicing The First Years and Rockport Co. overseas through MS&L outposts in the U.K., Germany and France, Carter said.
