Motorola Talks to Agencies About Assignment

Motorola is quietly talking to a select number of agencies about an assignment involving its Ecommerce business, sources said.
The client, based in Schaumburg, Ill., retains numerous roster shops here and abroad, but its estimated $100 million global account for consumer products is housed at McCann-Erickson, New York, which won the business in 1997.
Motorola is believed to have Contacted McCann and OgilvyOne, the interactive division of Ogilvy &
Mather Worldwide. Executives at both shops could not be reached or declined comment.
The size and scope of the interactive assignment could not be determined, but one source said billings would be “significant.”
Geoffrey Frost, vice president of global communications at Motorola, said through a representative: “It’s not our policy to comment on rumors; nevertheless, we are happy with our advertising relationship and have no plans to change it.
“There are separate discussions underway in the areas of PR and interactive marketing and design that are not related” to the larger account at McCann, she added.
Frost joined Motorola in February 1999 from Nike, where he worked with Wieden + Kennedy, Portland, Ore., and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco. Shortly after he left, Nike consolidated the account back at Wieden + Kennedy.
Last July, speculation surfaced that Motorola officials were talking to agencies about moving the business from McCann [Adweek, July 26, 1999], but the agency was said to have received a reprieve. Since then, the relationship has been solidified, sources said.
McCann recently used quarterback Brett Favre in a Motorola spot, in which he discovers his baby wearing a NFL headset. “Good morning,” Favre says. “The NFL has gone totally wireless,” reads the super. K
