More Stupid Ad Tricks

The Late Show with David Letterman took more meetings with some of “the top boys from Madison Avenue” last week.
In a new version of a sketch used last year, Letterman invited some ad people to pitch TV spot ideas for the Hello Deli, the show’s neighbor and a frequent butt of its jokes. Letterman and Rupert Jee, the deli’s owner, heard from the likes of Donny Deutsch and DMB&B creative chief John Nieman.
Noting Deutsch’s work for President Clinton’s first campaign, Letterman said, “Here’s this fat, crooked, greasy, philandering, pot-smoking, skirt-chasing bonehead from Arkansas and this man put him in office.”
During a meeting with N.W. Ayer & Partners’ Steven Feinberg, Letterman mentioned the satanic slander bedeviling its client Procter & Gamble.
“That’s OK,” said Letterman, who added that Jee also “worships the dark prince.”
Finally, Nieman came up with a jingle using the “Makin’ Whoopee!” tune. The song says, “We’re serving cheese fries to creepy dumb guys,” as a goofy Letterman gives a witless thumbs-up.
