McCann’s Weiss Moves to Momentum

NEW YORK Jeff Weiss has joined Interpublic Group’s Momentum from sibling McCann Erickson as executive creative director. He will head a new department that will combine the former’s event and sponsorship marketing with that of entertainment publicity through its PMK/HBH public relations firm, the agencies said.

Weiss had been the top creative of McCann’s world creative group in New York and before that, ran its Amster Yard division. When the latter was dissolved, he rejoined McCann.

At Momentum, Weiss, who is joining the agency with his longtime partner Paul Opperman, will report to worldwide CEO Chris Weil, who said in a statement, “The marriage of high-profile experience in advertising, celebrity PR, sponsorship and event marketing gives us unparalleled capabilities. Pat Kingsley [president of PMK/HBH] and I have worked with Jeff on projects and loved his ability to create amazing brand worlds on behalf of clients.”

Weiss and his group will work with Momentum clients American Express and Coca-Cola, and he will bring McCann’s Bacardi/Martini client with him to Momentum, the agency said.

With Weiss and Opperman, some staff in their group at McCann will also make the move to Momentum, including Matthew Stern, who will become co-managing director of Momentum with Greg Luckman.

Weiss, an art director by training, began his career by establishing his own shop in Los Angeles called Weiss 2. In the 1980s, he joined JWT in New York and then went on to Margeotes Fertitta & Weiss. When McCann Erickson started its Amster Yard division in 1994, it tapped Weiss to run it.

Clients of Momentum and PMK/HBH include American Airlines, Microsoft, Nestle, OfficeMax, Nike, XM Satellite Radio and Verizon Wireless. Momentum has offices in 48 countries. PMK/HBH operates in Los Angeles, New York and London.
