McCann’s McGuinness to Helm Unilever

NEW YORK Peter McGuinness, who ran the MasterCard account for four years at Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson, is relocating to London to oversee the shop’s global Unilever business, effective June 1, the agency said.

McGuinness, 36, an evp and worldwide account director, will replace Graham Sanderson on Unilever. Sanderson, 57, a three-decade McCann veteran, is retiring.

The agency handles Unilever in 50 countries. The client spends an estimated $4 billion in global media through various agencies.

During his career at McCann, Sanderson has held various positions, including managing director of the shop’s London office and director of the Coca-Cola Europe account.

In a statement, McCann WorldGroup CEO John Dooner said of the move, “Peter has done a superb job of working with MasterCard and with McCann Worldgroup disciplines to ensure the continued power of the ‘Priceless’ campaign domestically, and its flawless and effective expansion to over 100 markets around the world.”

In his new position, McGuinness will report to Europe, Middle East and Africa regional director David Warden. He previously reported to North America regional director Eric Keshin. (McGuinness joined McCann in New York in 1991 as a summer intern and began training in media before moving to account management. By 2000, he was a group managing director.)

Rich O’Leary will succeed McGuinness on the $300 million MasterCard account [Adweek Online, May 3]. O’Leary is transferring from McCann WorldGroup’s brand identity firm Futurebrand, where he was New York CEO. Before Futurebrand, O’Leary had been director of client services at McCann in New York.
