McCann Taps Grey Exec for L’Oreal

NEW YORK Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson said it has rehired Robert Montagnese from WPP Group’s Grey Worldwide.

At McCann in New York, he will be evp, worldwide account director on the agency’s L’Oreal business, which it handles in 80 countries. He replaces Martha Pease, who will develop other undisclosed projects at the agency, McCann said. She ran L’Oreal for nearly two years.

Since 2001, he had been working at Grey on Procter & Gamble’s Pantene brand. Montagnese started as evp, group managing director on the business, and earlier this year he was promoted to global business director. Debbie Reiner, an evp at Grey who has been working on P&G’s Cover Girl, was named to replace Montagnese on Pantene, Grey said.

Montagnese now reports to John Dooner, CEO of McCann Worldgroup, and Brett Gosper, president of McCann Erickson USA.

Montagnese, 49, worked on the L’Oreal business at McCann from 1994 to 2000, rising to evp and group managing director.

In a statement, Gosper said, “Robert is a world-class marketing professional with superb brand-building and leadership credentials. His knowledge of the dynamics, nuances and opportunities of the entire beauty category, as well as his background on L’Oreal, will help us build on L’Oreal’s leadership both in the important U.S. market and globally.”

Montagnese will work closely with McCann’s Paris-based worldwide L’Oreal account director, Claude Solanet.
