McCann S.F. Media Executive Joins Mintz & Hoke

Conn. Agency Completes Nationwide Search for Shamyer’s Successor
BOSTON–The lure of a better lifestyle helped Mintz & Hoke attract a media executive from the West Coast.
Bill Greer, vice president and director of media services with McCann-Erickson in San Francisco for the last three years, joined the Avon, Conn., agency last Tuesday as director of media services.
“Mintz & Hoke has grown tremendously in the past year, which is a key sign of agency strength,” Greer said. “[It’s also] the only agency where you can find top-notch talent and clients that is not in a major metropolitan area. That has some terrific advantages. It’s important to be happy with both sides of your life.”
Greer, who moved with his wife and two children, said good schools in Avon and cultural attractions factored into his decision to relocate.
Greer replaces Bob Shamyer, who died in August.
The shop, which reported billings of $67 million in 1997, conducted a nationwide search for a successor, according to Mintz & Hoke president and chief executive officer Chris Knopf.
“Bill’s an ideal fit,” Knopf said. “We couldn’t be happier to have him on board. His personality fits in with us, which is extremely important [to maintaining] a collegial atmosphere.”
Greer’s advertising career spans 21 years and includes stints at Lintas, DMB&B and Lowe & Partners, all in New York, working for such clients as AT&T Wireless Services, M&M Mars, Nikon Cameras, Pioneer Electronics, James River Corp., Georgia Pacific and Tri-Star Pictures.
His experience also includes eight years with the New York and San Francisco offices of KSL Media, where he served as director of strategic services before joining McCann three years ago.
That job was key in Knopf’s decision to hire him. “As our accounts grow, it’s important to have a very robust strategic product,” Knopf said. “[Greer’s] home base is in media but he has an interest and ability in strategic services.”
Mintz & Hoke has at least 10 staffers in its media department, which plans and buys media for such clients as Ames Department Stores, Mohegan Sun casino, Olympic Stain and The YoFarm Co.
