McCann Prepares to Welcome Oberlander

NEW YORK Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson is set to hire Bill Oberlander from WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather, sources said.

Oberlander will become an executive creative director at the shop, reporting to Joyce King Thomas, who was named two weeks ago as chief creative officer of McCann in New York. She replaced Nina DiSesa, who was in the job for 10 years. DiSesa retains the chairman’s title.

Oberlander had been at Ogilvy in New York since 2001, where he was a senior partner, ecd and most recently worked on the shop’s Motorola business. Before joining Ogilvy, Oberlander, 44, was a managing partner, ecd of Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners in New York.

He will be one of three ecd’s in McCann’s New York headquarters, along with Steve Ohler and Irwin Warren.

Oberlander is expected to start at McCann on Dec. 1 in what will be his second stint there. He spent five years at the agency prior to joining Kirshenbaum, working on accounts such as AT&T, Shearson-Lehman Brothers, Sony and Lufthansa Airlines.

Oberlander could not be reached for comment. A McCann representative was unavailable.
